Report to MWBC for On-Farm Cereal Variety and Advanced Breeding Line Testing across Montana for Environment Specific Cultivar Recommendations

Introduction

Commercially available winter wheat, spring wheat, barley and durum varieties are evaluated each year for agronomic performance and fit at on-farm locations across the state of Montana. Sites chosen for the research consider the environment, growing conditions and soil types, and represent the major land areas for producers in regions served by each local Research Center. The results from these trials are for farmers, extension personnel, certified seed producers and agronomic consultants to make the most informed decisions possible when it comes to appropriate variety selection for a specific area. In addition to commercially available varieties being tested, a small number of elite Montana State University breeding lines close to potential release are included to fulfill crop-years of testing requirements and to be able to make viable recommendations to area producers and others, once the release is made.

Results from these trials are compiled below.
