OBJECTIVES:
"
To
evaluate
malting
barley
yield
and
quality
as
affected
by
planting
rate,
row
width
and
use
of
a
plant
growth
regulator
(Cerone;.
Each
barley
variety
was
seeded
at
50,
100,
and
150
"
lb/A
on
4,
6,
or
12
inch
row
spaces
to
evaluate
effects
on
yield,
test
weight,
plumpness,
and
lodging
of,
Moravian
III,
Clark,
and
Klages
barleys.
"
SUMMARY
AND
RESULTS:
The
trial
conducted
in
1988,
was
identical
in
design
to
the
"
1987
trial.
For
the
sake
of
brevity,
we
have
included
only
one
table
on
yield
and
test
weight.
However,
data
has
been
analyzed
for
percent
plump/thin,
1000
kernel
wt.,
lodging,
seeds/spike,
n
and
spikes/meter
square.
These
are
available
upon
request.
There
were
no
differences
in
all
plot
yields
due
to
seeding
rate
or
row
width,
with
the
exception
of
Moravian,
which
yielded
significantly
less
when
planted
at
50
lb/A
or
at
a
4
inch
seeding
width.
Row
spacing
had
no
effect
on
spikes/sq.
meter
or
seeds/
spike,
however,
Moravian
has
fewer
spikes/sq.
meter
in
the
50
lb/A
seeding
rate
plot,
and
all
varieties
tended
to
have
fewer
r-t
seeds/spike
at
the
higher
seeding
rates,
an
observation
one
might
not
expect
to
occur.
^
Seeding
rate
effects
on
percent
plump
and
thin;
Seeding
rates
did
not
effect
percent
plump
with
the
exception
of
Clark
which
had
a
lower
percent
plump
in
the
100
and
150
#
seeding
rate
plots.
All
varieties
had
significantly
less
percent
thins
in
the
50
lb/A
seeding
rate
plots
a
result
you
would
expect
to
occur
due
to
perhaps
fewer
seed heads.
r-t
There

"
The
bottom
line
results
to
date
indicate
that
planting
6
or
12
inch
rows
at
50
or
100
lb/A
would
result
in
similar
yields
and
quality
of
these
malting
barley
varieties..
Cerone
application
significantly
reduced
yields
in
all
plots
compared
to
the
untreated
controls,
due
to
extreme
heat
stress
after
application.
