OBJECTIVES:
The
off-center
trials
are
conducted
to
evaluate
cereal
crop
varieties
grown
under
various
environmental
conditions.
The
off-
center
sites
allow
for
new
varieties
to
be
compared
directly
with
present
varieties
under
commercial
farming
managements
for
considered
advantages
to
replace
the
varieties
which
are
now
planted.
These
trials
are
used
not
only
for
demonstrations
of
new
or
potential
releases,
they
also
provide
a
significant
data
base
for
use
by
the
plant
breeders
when
evaluating
cultivar
responses
to
various
environments.
SUMMARY
AND
RESULTS:
Hard
red
winter
wheat
trial:
The
yield
range
at
the
Acton
site
ranged
from
23
to
14
Eushel/A.
The
varieties,
Vona,
Manning,
Centurk,
Cheyenne,
Wings,
Warrior,
and
Cree
were
the
top
yielders
in
the
trial.
All
varieties
were
short
due
to
the
drought
conditions
and
while
hopper
damage
was
noted,
it
was
not
as
severe
in
the
winter
wheat
trial
since
the
spring
wheat
and
barley
trials
were
completely
wiped
out
by
grasshoppers.
Irrigated
barley
trial:
Twenty
barley
varieties
and
selections
were
grown
at
the
Plant
Materials
site
at
Bridger.
^
Yields
ranged
from
98
to
73
bushel/A.
The
new
releases,
Gallatin,
Crystal,
and
Russell
were
among
the
high
yielders.
Test
weight
was
high
among
all
varieties
except
Steptoe.
Among
1-1
the
high
yielders. Crystal,
Russell
and
Steptoe
had
the
lowest
degree
of
lodging.
^
Irrigated
off-station
oat
trial,
Bridger
Plant
Material
CenteFT
Excellent
yields
were
realized
in
the
plots
ranging
from
181
to
127
bushel/A.
^
The
objective
of
this
study
was
to
compare
the
semi-dwarf
varieties
with
the
standard
height
varieties.
The
results
indicate
that
the
yields
of
the
semi-dwarf
selection
had
higher
or
equal
yields
and
test
weights
compared
to
the
standard
height
selectiosn.
Maturity
ratings
were
taken
to
evaluate
selections
for
percent
green
kernels
which
are
not
desireable
for
good
quality
feed
oats.
