OBJECTIVES:
To
evaluate
small
grain
varieties
under
the
environmental
conditions
prevalent
in
Central
Montana.
RESULTS;
Yields
this
year
seemed
to
be
as
much
below
average
as
the
yields
were
above
average
last
year.
Several
nurseries
were
abandoned
due
to
hail
damage,
drought,
and
grasshoppers.
Winter
wheat
varieties
were
harvested
from
five
locations
(Moore,
Denton,
Winfred,
Geraldine,
and
Highwood)
,
and
the
data
are
summarized
in
tables
1
through
5,
respectively.
In
general
the
best
performance
was
produced
from
the
earlier
maturing
varieties
such
as
Judith,
Vona,
Rocky,
and
Centurk,
however,
the
data
were
highly
variable
due
to
the
hot,
dry
growing
season.
Only
two
spring
wheat
locations
(Denton
and
Winfred)
were
harvested
this
year,
and
these
data
are
shown
in
tables
6
and
7.
The
data
from
Winfred
were
very
variable
and
no
significant
differences
were
measured.
The
spring
wheat
data
from
Denton
were
very
good
considering
the
dry
year,
the
spring
wheat
yields
were
actually
higher
than
the
winter
wheat
.
This
was
probably
due
to
the
distribution
of
precipitation
this
year.
Two
triticale
nurseries
were
harvested,
and
the
data
are
presented
in
tables
8
and
9.
Several
triticale
varieties
look
promising
such
as
Juan,
from
California,
Kramer,
from
North
Dakota,
and
T-54,
from
Alberta.
The
spring
barley
nurseries were
only
harvested
at
Denton
and
Moore
(see
tables
10
and
11)
.
These
data
are
very
variable,
but
still
show
the
excellent
performance
of
Hector
and
MT
81616
which
will
be
released
next
year.
Some
winter
barley
varieties
were
tested
this
year
at
the
Research
Center
under
fallow
and
no-till
conditions,
and
these
data
are
tabulated
in
table
12
and
13.
These
varieties
survived
the
winter
with
little
or
no
winterkill
but
did
not
yield
more
than
the
spring
varieties.
SUMMARY:
Off—station
nurseries
of
winter
wheat,
spring
wheat,
winter
barley,
spring
barley,
and
triticale
were
evaluated
at
several
locations
in
Central
Montana.
Variety
performance
was
hicrhlv
variable
because
of
the
hot,
dry
conditions,
and
producers
should
use
these
data
with
caution.
FUTURE
PLANS;
Continue
testing
of
small
grain
varieties
at
locations
in
Central
Montana.
